The client’s original brief was to extend out at first floor to create additional bedroom space. However, the house is in a Conservation Area and has significant character. A first-floor extension would therefore be unacceptable to the local planning authority.
We suggested a new single storey link building between the main house and an existing underused annexe. This meant we could locate the additional bedroom within the annexe and provide a new hall and entrance for the house. The clients were delighted with the outcome.
The design concept links the two disconnected parts of the existing house, using a lightweight, glazed lantern which brings natural daylight into new generous entrance hall. At the same time, by hiding our interpretation of a traditional Victorian conservatory behind a masonry facade and traditional front entrance, we retained the visual character of the house.
